Civ V is one of the most difficult games to play on its hardest difficulty. Even with perfect skill there are many times where it is impossible to get a victory because of another run away civ or a bad start in which you are sevierely hindered. One of the most difficult victories to accomplish is a domination victory. This requires good army positioning, good tech tree choices and a little luck with how they rest of the map plays out. Below Ill describe some of the what I feel were the key moments in Marbozir's playthrough of Civ V as Germany. Not only does he get a domination victory but he does it with a fairly close spawn to Assyria which is a very good early game war time civ. This game has several key decisions that I adopted to achieve better success in my games. Taking the Morraco request to war with Assyria was an important decision. This was a little bit of luck but it was also a tough decision because Marbozir was not quite ready. With great unit positioning, great use of Germany's special ability to get extra combatants from barbarian encampments he was able to farm a lot of experience form this early war.
His decision to get workshops first was a key diversion from early tech focusing. He mentions that he did not like this as it hindered his science. But he utilized it as best as he could and his cities were not good production cities. His assessment was correct that he needed workshops even if he felt it was better to go science. This tech decision also snowballed into rushing dynamite. As he stated maybe a strategy he doesnt like , but a strategy he did execute masterfully. With dynamite his taking of Assur was strait forward.
His trade route usage and timing of the World's Fair spring boarded him to the late game. This is a skill that keep many back from being able to play deity and he displays exactly all the different ways trade and diplomacy can be used to give you the most advantage.
a) Florance as a choice ally for iron
b) Making trades based on what will give you king of the day in your cities
c) timing research agreements with getting worlds fair and opening up his rationalism policies. this opens up the Porcelain Tower bonus for him and really is what allows him to exercise a late game domination victory.
He started the World's Fair while still in war with Assyria. At this time his crossbowmen were so good because of the experience gained in the long war.
He does a good analysis of of going into plastics before flight detailing his options to see if he can line up a great scientist or a spy tech steal. Its a good look into what are all the possibilities and tradeoffs one can do to plan an attack. He eventually plans on using his social policy to complete rationalism and rush electronics and instead spend his turns researching plastics and flight. A display of really through macro system management (social policies, technology scheduling , great people, spies). A little later the spy ends up stealing refrigeration, which is key for the sea attack he wants to do against England. A little luck is always needed but in a sense Marbozir created his own luck here.
First great writer spawns for him at turn 357 on epic speed. This is super late but it told me that delaying units/buildings is necessary to take the winning chance you are given. Basically thats this game in a nutshell. Be decisive and forward thinking.
